Swim Lessons for Beginners
SwimAmerica Swim Lessons
The Waukee Natatorium is pleased to be a part of the SwimAmerica swimming lessons program. Swim America’s goal is to teach students to swim for health, safety, fun, and fitness. SwimAmerica is an international, state of the art, learn to swim program that operates in nine countries.. SwimAmerica programs operate in conjunction with the American Swimming Coaches Association and all instructors are trained by Shelley Twigg and Bobby Kelley.
Stations for Beginner Lessons
Station 1: Water Adjustment & Blowing Bubbles
Station 2: Floats and Glides
Station 3: Kicking
Station 4: Pulling with Kicking
Station 5: Freestyle
Station 6: Backstroke and Treading Water
Classe Structure
Beginner lessons will be taught in the Program Pool at the Waukee Natatorium starting every half-hour. Instruction for these classes will be 30 minutes with the average student-to-instructor ratio three to one.
Registering for Beginner Lessons
When registering, students do not register for specific stations. Students will be placed on day one based on their ability and skills they already know. Once placed in a Station, students will continue to move and advance from Station to Station.
Advanced Swim Lessons / Pre-Competitive Swimming
Advanced lessons are for students who have advanced past Station 6 of the SwimAmerica curriculum. Advanced lessons will be taught in the Competition Pool at the Natatorium. Advanced Lessons classes are 45 minutes. Instruction focuses on developing all four competitive swimming strokes, teaching students how to dive from the side of the pool, and introduces students to competitive swimming starts and turns,
Beginner lessons Classes
- 5 minutes for guiding student to pool and correct station
- 30 minutes of Instruction in the water
- 5 minutes for guiding students from the pool to the lobby

- July 13-23
- July 27-August 6
40 minute Class Times between the hours of 8:00-11:40 AM & 3:00-5:10 PM
2026 Summer Rates
- $80/session - Students who attend Waukee School District Schools
- $5.00/session - Students who attend Waukee School District Schools and also receive Free and Reduced Lunches
- $120/session - General Public (Students who do not attend Waukee School District Schools)
Please note:
- The locker rooms are not available for Beginner Lessons students.
- Students may use the lobby restrooms to change.
- Students who need assistance with going to the restroom must have a guardian who is available to assist.
Advanced lessons / Pre-Competitive Swimming
Summer 2026 Sessions Dates and Times
- June 1-10
- June 15-25
- July 13-23
- July 27-August 6
- 45 minute Classes
- Classes starting at the top of every hour
- Classes are offered from 8:00-11:45 AM & 3:00-4:45 PM
Prerequisites
In order to swim with Advanced Lessons, sudents must be able to do the following:
- Swim 25 Freestyle breathing to the side
- Swim 25 yards Backsroke
- Tread water for 1 minute
- Be comfortable swimming in deep water
2026 Summer Rates
- $80/session - Students who attend Waukee School District Schools
- $5.00/session - Students who attend Waukee School District Schools and also receive Free and Reduced Lunches
- $120/session - General Public (Students who do not attend Waukee School District Schools)
Please note:
- The locker rooms are available for Advanced Lesson students.
- Students who need assistance with changing must use the lobby restrooms.
Waukee School District uses Captyn online services for registrations for swim lessons and other aquatic programs.
Students of Waukee School District must be registered as Members to be eligible to register for swim lessons early and to receive the reduced rate for lessons.
To register students as Members, follow these steps:
- Create a family account in Captyn by entering parent's email, parent's name, phone number, and address
- In the "My Registrations" section, select All
- Click on +Add
- Select Student of Waukee School District (No Charge)
- Add student (s) to family account as Members/Students of Waukee School District
Once memberships are verified and accepted, students may register for lessons at the earlier dates and will be charge the reduced rates for lessons.
